While the sea swept shores of Santa Monica, Malibu and Venice Beach are the epitome of Southern California splendor, the crowds and traffic jams are anything but. After a hectic work week, the thought of spending hours in traffic only to fight through a crowded beach is not my idea of relaxation. To kick back and beat the heat in style, rooftop pools in LA are the way to go. Whether your idea of mental decompression is partying like a rock star, taking in live entertainment or chilling poolside with a glass of wine, there is a rooftop pool for you.
Here are three of my favorite rooftop pools in LA:
1.The Rooftop Bar at The Standard
550 S. Flower St
Partygoers and socialites from all over California congregate at The Rooftop Bar in Downtown LA. For the ultimate pool party experience, it is best arrive after 8PM on weekends. A $20 cover fee is required after 8PM, but this is a small price to pay for access to a perfectly tempered pool, panoramic views of the city and a live DJ. The atmosphere is conducive to working up an appetite which can be satisfied by menu loaded with delicious bar bites priced under $15. We strongly recommend their Truffle and Parmesan cheese fries and checking out their Biergarten. To avoid the more raucous crowds (and cover charge), arrive on a weekday between 12:30pm-1:30am.
2. Upstairs Bar at the Ace Hotel
929 S. Broadway
As if lounging by a pristine pool encircled by skyscrapers isn't interesting enough, The Upstairs Bar always has an event schedule jam packed with live entertainment. From book release parties and pop-up shops to DJs and live bands, there is never a dull moment. I love their "don't call it happy hour," which features frosty $5 beers or wine spritzers and delectable $1 oysters weekdays from 12pm-5:30pm.
3. Altitude Pool at SLS Hotels Beverly Hills
465 S. La Cienega Blvd
The Altitude at SLS Beverly Hills Hotel is in a league of its own when it comes to indulgence. If you have the bankroll, for $600 you can live like royalty for a day with a private cabana rental. Cabanas are equipped with everything from flat-screen televisions to menu items planned by award-winning chef José Andrés. If you don’t want to splurge too much, I recommend booking a stay and arriving at the pool before noon to secure a lounge chair (first-come-first-serve). During spring and summer months, Altitude transforms into a poolside lounge with live DJs spinning from 2pm to 6pm.
Let us know where you're headed, we'll meet you there!
